Our Story
Flavour Lab has been created by a mother who loves to cook with her daughter.
Born and raised in India, Sonam Samat moved to the US to get a PhD in Behavioural Sciences. After graduating she worked as a User Experience Researcher at Facebook (Meta) and Google in California.
During this time, Sonam also became a mother. Her daughter Zaara has been in the kitchen from the time that she was barely a year old. Zaara began by helping with meal prep (mixing, measuring, pouring). Over time, Sonam and her husband realised that these moments in the kitchen are great opportunities to teach Zaara about important food values like why it is important to reduce food wastage, have gratitude for the food we eat, eat local and seasonal ingredients, be mindful about the impact of different ingredients on our bodies. Because of these experiences, Zaara became an enthusiastic toddler chef and an adventurous foodie. In fact, some of the first text she learned to read was nutrition labels at the back of packaged food boxes!
After spending 13 years in the US, Sonam decided to leave her comfy job at Google, move back to India, attend Culinary School and start Flavour Lab. Her goal is to share with others the joy and benefits of cooking with children. She asked a simple question – Why isn’t culinary and nutrition education part of every school’s curriculum? After all, we all eat three meals a day! Knowing the impact of food on our bodies and on the planet is an essential life skill that every child should learn – all while having fun in the kitchen!
